Kaine for example, feels like "ow the edge" tier writing and that includes the justification for horribly designed lingerie. We've already seen the effect of what happens when the only representations of one gender are shown in one way, the dissonance it creates when it comes to character designs, as well as the mindsets it creates. Quiet was terrible as well but, to me, that had to do more of how she was written than what she was wearing.Īs a post above says, "sexy characters" don't happen in isolation. More or less clothes doesn't equal an interesting character or a good representation of women, Evie Frye was the most boring character I've ever had to play as and that had nothing to do what she was wearing. She's my favorite character in NieR as a matter of fact. I also don't think an artist should justify why he/she are including sexy characters in their game, unless they're terribly or offensively written what's the harm in characters dressed like 2A or even Kaine? Sure, I thought that Kaine walking around in an underwear was silly but after knowing her background I actually sympathized with her and not even once did I feel the character was undermined by what she's wearing, that detail gave her depth, a tragic past, and a very interesting personality. A little fan-service honestly doesn't bother me, especially since we also get topless guys with tight pants in the same game. I dunno, I'm just one straight white guy trying to figure it all out.Īs a woman, I totally don't feel offended by 2B's design, I think its quite stylish and really cool too look at. Make them sexy as you like I guess, just have it make sense? In some way? So that's good, and of course not all female characters have to dress like Lara Croft. Tomb Raider, Dishonored 2, then we have Mass Effect, Horizon on the. One thing that's great regardless is the amount of female characters in gaming lately. It would be refreshing for once to not feel like I was playing as the sexual fantasy of some middle-aged Japanese dude. It's compounded by the sheer amount of scantily clad female characters in this type of game. Now there could be a reason for her design in Automata, and perhaps I will regret my words and deeds, but for now the reason being "the creator wanted to make a sexy android" is absolutely not enough. A good character, in my opinion, is not half-naked for no reason. Ignoring for a moment other issues I've already mentioned in this thread ( what girls/women think/feel when playing this game and looking at 2B), I like good characters. Butt (heh) it doesn't stop that reasoning being pretty juvenile. I'm probably gonna play this game and I'm probably gonna enjoy it too.
